About IES Exam
Indian Engineering Services remains the most sought-after career for the engineering graduates in India. Engineering Services Examination commonly known as ESE is conducted annually by UPSC to recruit engineers in four domains namely
The examination constitutes a two-stage written examination followed by an interview. ESE is considered as one of the toughest examinations in India due to fewer posts. Owing to highly competitive selection procedure.
These candidates after the final selection are posted in various Ministries and Departments of GOI such as Railways, Telecom, Border Roads, CPWD, CWC, CPES, NHAI, Naval Armaments, IDSE, MES, Ordnance Factories etc., however, the selected candidates can move to any cadre, organisation, agency, department, ministry and PSU of the Government of India. All these final selected candidates are designated as class-1 officers.
IES Exam Eligibility
Medical Fitness
After the declaration of final results of ESE examination, all the candidates who make it to the final list have to undergo medical fitness tests conducted by Railway Board at various Railway Hospitals. This medical examination is basically done to assess the suitability of the candidate for various services/departments opted by him/her. The final cadre allocation is done only after the recommendations sent by the medical board through the medical reports of the candidate. Below mentioned is the list of medical tests carried out for every candidate and the criteria for each test which decides whether the candidate is fit or unfit for the selected services:
All those candidates seeking appointment in
Height criteria for male candidates : 152cm
Height criteria for female candidates : 150cm
This is relaxable in case of scheduled tribes and races belonging to Gorkhas, Garhwalis etc.
For all services minimum chest expansion should be 5cm.
Candidate will be directed to take deep inspiration several times and then maximum expansion of the chest will be carefully noted. Fraction less than half of a centimeter will not be noted. Chest expansion measurements will be done twice before coming to final decision
Eyesight test results will be recorded based on two tests:
General Examination: This will be done to detect any unhealthy conditions of eye, eyelids or contiguous structure which can render the candidate unfit in future.

IES Exam FAQ
Ans: Both UPSC and IAS exams necessitate extensive preparation, mental fortitude, and perseverance. Students with an engineering background, on the other hand, will find IES to be slightly easier and may even profit from it when at work. The IES is regarded as a technical exam, and graduate knowledge may be sufficient to pass it.
Ans: There is no limit to how many times a candidate can take the IES exam. Candidates can sit the IES Exam up to the maximum age limit prescribed by the Union Public Services Commission.
Ans: He must be at least 21 years old and not more than 30 years old on January 1, 2022. They had to have been born between January 2, 1992, and January 1, 2001, to qualify.
Ans: For IES, there is no requirement for a specific proportion of marks. The candidate must be an Indian citizen who has either sat for the final Graduation Degree exam in any discipline of engineering or has graduated from a recognised university between the ages of 21 and 30, with reserved candidates having an upper age limit.
Ans: There are a total of four categories in IES exams.
Ans: The IES syllabus for mains constitutes two papers; Paper-I and Paper-II
Ans: The IES results for all stages are available on UPSC’s official website.
Ans: The cut-off score for the IES exam will be available on the official website of the UPSC after the interview session.
Ans: Candidates must carry any ID proofs like Aadhar card or Voter ID card.
