About Group-D Exams

Group D Exam is conducted by RRB to recruit eligible candidates for various posts of Grade-IV, in Level 1 of 7th CPC Pay Matrix in various departments of Indian Railways. Candidates who want to realise their dream of working for the prominent Indian Government Sector (Indian Railways) can take the RRB Group D Level 1, RRB NTPC and other railway examinations conducted by the Railway Recruitment Board.

Group-D Exam Eligibility

Candidates willing to apply for the RRB Group D exam are required to fulfil certain conditions to be eligible to appear for the Railway Group D exam.

The conditions for RRB Group D eligibility are decided by the conduction body itself. The eligibility criteria important for candidates to fulfil are prescribed in detail in the RRB Group D official notification.

The candidate’s eligibility for the RRB Group D exam is based on the fulfilment of the following conditions:

  1. Nationality
  2. RRB Group D Age Limit
  3. RRB Group D Qualification

The highlights of RRB Group D eligibility criteria are given below:

RRB Group D Nationality

A candidate is eligible to appear for the RRB Group D exam only if he/she is:

  1. A citizen of India, or
  2. A subject of Nepal, or
  3. A subject of Bhutan, or
  4. A Tibetan refugee permanently settled in India from and before January 1, 1962.
  5. A person of Indian origin migrated from Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Burma, East African countries of Uganda, Kenya, the United Republic of Tanzania, Malawi, Zaire, Zambia, Ethiopia and Vietnam with the intention of permanently settling in India.

Provided that a candidate belonging to categories (2), (3), (4) and (5) present a certificate of eligibility issued by the Government of India to the recruiting body.

RRB Group D Age Limit

The Railway Recruitment Board has set the RRB Group D Lower Age limit to 18 years and that of RRB Group D maximum age limit is 33 years. Any candidates beyond the age limit extremes as prescribed by the Railway Board will not be allowed to appear for the examination.

As prescribed in the notification, RRB Group D Age Limit for candidates in the RRB Group D 2022 examination is to be reckoned from 1st July 2019.

Candidates appearing for RRB Group D 2022 examination must have their date of birth between 1st July 2019 and the dates given in the table below.


Note* – Candidates should fill the same date of birth in the application form as recorded in the Matriculation/ Class 10th certificate or an equivalent certificate because no subsequent request for changing the date of birth will be considered.

The candidates belonging to reserved categories are entitled to certain relaxation on the RRB Group D Age Limit criteria.

The RRB Group D Age relaxation allowed to reserved category candidates are as mentioned below:

The detailed age relaxation to reserved category candidates as mentioned in the notification is provided below:

Note*

  1. If a candidate is eligible for age relaxation on more than one ground, he would be accorded the highest of the limits (not cumulative) for which he is eligible.
  2. Candidates belonging to SC/ST/OBC-NCL (Non-Creamy Layer) and applying against unreserved vacancies will not be allowed any relaxation on age.
  3. PwBD candidates applying against UR vacancies will be allowed age relaxation applicable for UR PwBD only

RRB Group D Education Qualification

The minimum qualification mandatory for candidates to possess for the RRB Group D exam is set by the Railway Recruitment Board.

The minimum education qualification that the board expects from candidates in order to be eligible for the RRB Group D examination is 10th pass (OR) ITI from institutions recognised by NCVT/SCVT (or) equivalent (OR) National Apprenticeship Certificate (NAC) granted by NCVT.

Group-D Exam Pattern

Candidates willing to know the detailed syllabus of the RRB Group D exam must first keep abreast with the latest RRB Group D selection process or exam pattern.

As prescribed in the official RRB Group D notification, the selection process for the RRB Group D exam comprises four stages excluding the RRB Group D Apply Online process and issuance of RRB Group D Admit Card.

The four stages of the RRB Group D Exam pattern are

  • Computer-Based Examination
  • Physical Efficiency Test 
  • Document Verification
  • Medical Examination

Stage- 1: RRB Group D CBT (Computer Based Examination)

All those candidates who filled out RRB Group D registration forms and received the admit cards have to appear for the RRB Group D CBT test.

It is to be noted that:

  • The Questions will be of objective type with multiple choices.
  • The computer-based test of the RRB Group D exam is conducted for 90 minutes.
  • A total of 100 questions are asked with 1 mark for each correct answer.
  • There is a negative marking of ⅓ marks for each wrong attempt in the CBT.
  • The PwBD applicants who are accompanied by a scribe will have 120 minutes for the RRB Level 1 exam.

The minimum score required to qualify in various categories:

  • UR – 40%
  • EWS – 40%
  • OBC (Non-creamy) – 30%
  • SC – 30%
  • ST – 30%

Note: If there are not enough PwBD candidates to fill all open positions, this percentage of eligibility marks may be lowered by 2 %.

Stage- 2: RRB Group D PET/PST Test

  • Candidates based on their performance in the CBT are selected for the PET tests. 
  • Candidates will be selected for PET 3 times the number of vacancies. 
  • The Railways Board do, however, reserve the right to alter this ratio as necessary to guarantee that there are enough/reasonable numbers of applicants to fill all of the advertised positions. 
  • Passing Physical Efficiency Test (PET) is mandatory and the same will be qualifying in nature. The following criteria apply to PET:

Female Candidates

Male Candidates

Should be able to lift and carry 20 kg for 100 metres in two minutes, all at once, without setting the weight down. Should be able to pick up and carry 35 kg for 100 metres in 2 minutes, without having to set the weight down.
Should be able to run 1000 metres in 5 minutes, 40 seconds, in one attempt. Should be able to run 1000 metres in 4 minutes, 15 seconds, in one attempt.

After the PET test, RRB Group D results are announced. Marks scored by candidates in CBT are normalised and then the results for RRB Group D will be made available online in PDF format displaying the qualifying candidates. 

Stage- 3: RRB Group D Document Verification

Candidates will be called for document verification based on their CBT performance and subject to their PET qualification. 

  • The total number of applicants invited for document verification will equal twice the number of open positions.
  • On the day of their DV, shortlisted candidates must present a NOC from their company, or else their candidacy would be withdrawn. 
  • The applicants’ signatures on all documents, whether they are in Hindi or English, should be the same.

Stage- 4: RRB Group D Medical Examination

Candidates have to appear for the medical examination round after the verification of documents. The final letter of appointment is issued to candidates who are found medically fit.

RRB Group D Exam Dates

The RRB Group D exam dates are announced with the release of the RRB Group D notification. The exam dates for RRB Group D are decided by the Railway Recruitment Board itself. The Railway Recruitment Board (RRBs) has announced the date of the RRB Group D exam for 2022, which will take place on June 30. The RRB Group D Exam 2022 will now be held from August 17th, 2022, in multiple shifts, according to the officials. There won’t be a second stage of the CBT for the CEN RRC, according to RRB’s notification (Level-1).
