About CAPF Exams

The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) holds written examination for recruitment of Assistant Commandants (Group A) in the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) under the Ministry of Home Affairs.

The five forces under CAPF for which the CAPF AC examination is conducted are Border Security Force (BSF), Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) and Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB).

Candidates (excepting Female/SC/ST Candidates who are exempted from payment of fee) are required to pay fee of Rs.200/- (Rupees Two Hundred only)

CAPF Exam Eligibility

  • Nationality: a citizen of India, a subject of Nepal or Bhutan
  • No person who is not a citizen of India shall, except with the consent of the Central Government signified in writing be appointed or employed under these Rules. Provided that nothing contained in these rules shall debar the appointment, enrolment or employment of a subject of Nepal or Bhutan under these Rules.
  • Sex: Both Male and Female candidates are eligible for appointment to the post of Assistant Commandants.
  • Age Limits: A candidate must have attained the age of 20 years and must not have attained the age of 25 years. Upper age limit prescribed above will be relaxable:
  • Upto a maximum of five years if a candidate belongs to a Scheduled Caste or a Scheduled Tribe.
  • Upto a maximum of three years in the case of candidates belonging to Other Backward Classes
  • Upto a maximum of five years for Civilian Central Government Servants in accordance with the existing instructions of the Central Government. Ex-Servicemen will also be eligible for this relaxation. However, the total relaxation claimed on account of Government Service will be limited to five years.
  • Minimum Educational Qualifications: a bachelor’s degree
  • Possession of NCC ‘B’ or ‘C’ Certificates: is a
  • desirable qualification. These qualifications will be given consideration at the time of Interview/Personality Test only.

CAPF Exam Pattern

  1. Written Examination: The written examination to be conducted by Union Public Service Commission will comprise two papers. Paper I will be held from 10 a.m. to 12.00 Noon and Paper II will be held from 2.00 p.m. to 5.00 p.m.
    • Paper I: General Ability and Intelligence (250 Marks) - The questions in this paper will be of Objective (Multiple Answers) Type in which the questions will be set in English as well as Hindi.
    • Paper II: General Studies, Essay and Comprehension (200 Marks) - In this paper candidates will be allowed the option of writing the Essay Component in English or Hindi, but the medium of Precis Writing, Comprehension Components and other communications/ language skills will be English only.
  2. Physical Standards/Physical Efficiency Tests and Medical Standards Tests: Candidates who are declared qualified in the written examination will be summoned for Physical Standards/Physical Efficiency Tests and Medical Standards Tests. Physical Efficiency Tests (PET)

  3. Interview/Personality Test: Candidates who are declared qualified in the Medical Standards Tests, will be called for Interview/Personality Test to be conducted by Union Public Service Commission. The Interview/Personality Test will carry 150 Marks.
  4. Final Selection/Merit: The merit list will be drawn on the basis of marks obtained by the candidates in the Written Examination and Interview/Personality Test.

CAPF Exam Syllabus

Paper I: General Ability and Intelligence
The objective type questions with multiple choices in this paper will broadly cover the following areas:

  • General Mental Ability: The questions will be designed to test the logical reasoning, quantitative aptitude including numerical ability, and data interpretation.
  • General Science: The questions will be set to test general awareness, scientific temper, comprehension and appreciation of scientific phenomena of everyday observation including new areas of importance like Information Technology, Biotechnology, Environmental Science.
  • Current Events of National and International Importance: The questions will test the candidates’ awareness of current events of national and international importance in the broad areas of culture, music, arts, literature, sports, governance, societal and developmental issues, industry, business, globalisation, and interplay among nations.
  • Indian Polity and Economy: The questions shall aim to test candidates’ knowledge of the Country’s political system and the Constitution of India, social systems and public administration, economic development in India, regional and international security issues and human rights including its indicators.
  • History of India: The questions will broadly cover the subject in its social, economic and political aspects. This shall also include the areas of growth of nationalism and freedom movement.
  • Indian and World Geography: The questions shall cover the physical, social and economic aspects of geography pertaining to India and the World.

  • Part-A – Essay questions which are to be answered in long narrative form either in Hindi or English totaling 80 Marks. The indicative topics are modern Indian history especially of the freedom struggle, geography, polity and economy, knowledge of security and human rights issues, and analytical ability.
  • Part-B – Comprehension, précis writing, other communications/language skills – to be attempted in English only (Marks 120) – The topics are Comprehension passages, précis writing, developing counter arguments, simple grammar and other aspects of language testing.

Q.1 How many attempts are there for CAPF AC Exam?

ANS: There is no restriction on the number of attempts. However, the age limit has been mentioned for different categories. Candidates can apply for the CAPF AC exam until the upper age limit exceeds.

Q.2 Does CAPF have government job benefits?

ANS: Yes, CAPF is a government job so it comes with its benefits and allowances.

Q.3 Does CAPF get a pension?

ANS: Yes, the CAPF gets pensions according to the Seventh Pay Commission’s one-rank-one-pension formula.

Q.4 What is the CAPF exam and who conducts it?

ANS: CAPF (Central Armed Police Force) AC exam is a competitive exam conducted annually by UPSC (Union Public Service Commission) to recruit candidates in various security forces of India. The selected candidates join the forces as Assistant Commandant, AC.

Q.5 What is the eligibility requirement for the CAPF exam?

ANS: The applicant must be an Indian citizen.
Age should be between 20-25 years. There is some relaxation based on the categories, 5 years of relaxation is given to SC/ST categories whereas 3 years to OBC.
The candidate must be a graduate from the reputed college of India.

Q.6 Who all recruit through the CAPF exam?

ANS: There are seven security forces under the Ministry of Home Affairs that recruit through the CAPF Exam:

Q.7 What is the exam pattern for the CAPF exam?

ANS: CAPF AC exam is conducted in offline mode and it involves three stages:

  1. Written Paper
    Paper-I includes Mental & General Ability, it is for 250 marks and the time duration for this section is 2 hours.
    Paper-II includes General Studies, Essay, and Comprehension, it is for 200 marks and the time duration for this section is 3 hours.
  2. Physical Test
    100 meters race – The time limit for men and women is 16 seconds and 18 seconds respectively.
    800 meters race – The time limit for men and women is 3 minutes 45 seconds and 4 minutes 45 seconds respectively.
    Long jump – The qualifying distances for men and women are 3.5 meters and 3 meters respectively.
    Shot put – The qualifying distance for men is 4.5 meters.
  3. Interview
    This round is for 150 marks.

Q.8 What salary does a CAPF AC qualifier is supposed to get in their job?

ANS: The average salary of a person who qualifies CAPF is around Rs. 50,000. Which is a good start.

Q.9 How many times does UPSC conduct the CAPF exam?

ANS: UPSC holds the CAPF exam once every year. The final process of the CAPF AC exam takes more than one year to complete.

Q.10 Does the CAPF exam include negative marking?

ANS: Yes, there is a provision of penalty in case of wrong answers but it is applicable only in Paper 1.

Q.11 Does the CAPF exam allow women candidates?

ANS: Yes, women too can apply for the CAPF exam although there are different fitness criteria for them.

Q.12 Is there any provision for correction in the application/registration form in case of a fault?

ANS: Candidates need to fill the registration form with utmost care as there is no provision for a correction once the form is submitted.
